The musicology faculty and students at the University of Iowa are looking forward to the fourth annual Iowa Musicology Day, to be held on April 14. Participants include: Lisa Mumme, Nathan Platte, Marian Wilson Kimber, Megan Small, and Cody Norling.

Musicology students and faculty attended the annual meeting of the Society for American Music, held in Kansas City, February 28 through March 4: Sarah Suhadolnik, Marian Wilson Kimber, Natalie Landowski, and Andrew Tubbs.

With Thanksgiving break just around the corner, it’s a good time to acknowledge the many contributions of our students and faculty at recent conferences: Marian Wilson Kimber, Cody Norling, Christine Getz, Daniel Thompson, Trevor Harvey, Andrew Tubbs, Kelsey McGinnis, Sarah Suhadolnik, and Nathan Platte.

University of Iowa students and faculty traveled to Drake University in Des Moines to present papers at the second Iowa Musicology Day on Saturday, March 26. Professor Marian Wilson Kimber chaired the program committee for the event.

Prof. Eric Saylor will host the annual Iowa Musicology Day conference at Drake University in Des Moines on Saturday, March 26, between 9 and 5:30 in Room 204 of the Fine Arts Center. The conference brings together musicologists and students from Iowa schools to share their research.  All are welcome to attend.

Musicology and Theory Faculty and Students are delivering papers this fall: Marian Wilson Kimber, Jennifer Iverson, and Kelsey McGinnis.

Kati Meyer, a PhD candidate in Music Theory, traveled to Bristol, UK to give a paper at the RMA Student Conference January 8-10, 2015. Kati’s paper, ‘I Hope You Don’t Mind That I Put Down in Words’: The Cognitive Strategies in the Music of Elton John, was well attended and well received by her peers at this exciting conference.

Faculty members are making a strong showing at the 2014 joint national conference of the AMS (American Musicological Society) and SMT (Society for Music Theory) in Milwaukee: Robert C. Cook, Marian Wilson Kimber, and Jennifer Iverson.

With help from the School of Music and International Programs, Matthew Arndt presented a paper on Arnold Schoenberg at the European Music Analysis Conference (EuroMAC), held in Leuven, Belgium, September 17–20. 

The weekend of April 4–6 2014: Christine Getz journeyed to San Antonio for the annual meeting of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music, where she presented a paper titled, “At the Sacred Font: Federico Borromeo, Giovanni Battista Cima, and the Milanese Sacred Concerto.” Trevor Harvey drove north to Lawrence University, where he gave a paper titled “Avatars, Authenticity, and Live Musical Performances in Second Life” at the Midwest Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology. An entire UI delegation of musicology students, faculty, and music librarian travelled to University of Northern Iowa to participate in the first annual Iowa Musicology Conference.  

Ph.D. candidate Shih-Ni Prim presented a paper titled “Maurice Abravanel and Gustav Mahler: The Reception of Early Mahler Recordings by Abravanel and the Utah Symphony Orchestra” at the 2014 AMS-Southeast Chapter Spring meeting at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

With support from the UI School of Music and International Programs, Matthew Arndt attended the Seventh International Conference on Music Theory January 8–11 in Tallinn and Pärnu, Estonia. Arndt gave a paper on a problem of unrest in Arnold Schoenberg’s Little Piano Piece, op. 19, no. 2.
