The first half of the semester has been especially productive. Here are a few of the activities that students and faculty have been pursuing: Marian Wilson Kimber, Matthew Arndt, Cody Norling, Andrew Tubbs, Lisa Mumme, Sarah Lucas, Trevor Harvey, and Nathan Platte.

Hang Nguyen, a Ph.D. candidate in Musicology, was recently hired to work as an assistant librarian at the State Historical Society in Iowa City. Dr. Trevor Harvey recently released his seventh episode for Ethnomusicology Today, a podcast that he hosts and produces for the Society of Ethnomusicology. Dr. Nathan Platte’s book Making Music in Selznick’s Hollywood was recently published by Oxford University Press.

The Musical Thought and Spiritual Lives of Heinrich Schenker and Arnold Schoenberg by Matthew Arndt, Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of Iowa School of Music, has just been published by Routledge, the world’s leading academic publisher in the humanities and social sciences.

Nathan Platte’s essay,”‘The Epic and Intimately Human’: Contemplating the Tara Theme in Gone With the Wind,” was just published in Music in Epic Film: Listening to Spectacle (Routledge, 2016). 

Iowa faculty have recently been active in publishing scholarship, presenting papers, and developing new pedagogies: Christine Getz, Trevor Harvey, Michael Eckert, Jennifer Iverson, Marian Wilson Kimber, and Matthew Arndt.

Gregory Newbold, an MA student in musicology, spent the summer of 2015 reading five recent titles from the Film Score Guide series (Scarecrow Press).

The Journal of the Society for American Music (JSAM) has recently published three articles by Iowa faculty and alumnus: Robert C. Cook, Nikki Malley, Nathan Platte, and Marian Wilson Kimber.

James Bungert's article “Bach and the Patterns of Transformation” (after Laurence Dreyfus’s Bach and the Patterns of Invention (1996)), is slated for publication in Music Theory Spectrum in fall of 2015 (37/2). He also landed a tenure-track job teaching music theory and music history at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana, to begin Fall 2014.

A number of new titles in the Oxford Handbook series feature contributions from University of Iowa faculty: Trevor Harvey, Nathan Platte, Robert C. Cook, Mary Cohen, and Jennifer Iverson.

Marian Wilson Kimber has recently written about the role of poetic recitation in concert life at Musicology Now, the blog of the American Musicological Society.
