Ross Clowser (Musicology) recently completed his master’s degree with a thesis titled, “A Past, Present, and Future of Des Moines Jazz: An Ethnography of the Des Moines Community Jazz Center’s Student Jam Session.” Ross’s thesis draws on interviews, archival research, and ethnographic fieldwork to reflect on the CJC’s efforts to “facilitate cultural transmission and learning through student jam sessions that connect beginning and intermediate jazz students with local musicians and educators.” Ross’s research also allowed him to contemplate and reconnect with a community organization that shaped his own development as a young artist growing up in Des Moines. Ross is now based in the Twin Cities, where he is continuing to work as a musician, composer, teacher, scholar, and advocate of collaborative, community-rooted arts initiatives. Congratulations, Ross, and best of luck on your new projects!
