Cody Norling (PhD candidate, Musicology) has a new article out in American Music (40:1). Titled “Making an American Opera Career: Conductor May Valentine (1890-1974) and a Woman’s Role(s) in the Business of Opera,” Norling’s study shows how Valentine’s extraordinarily varied career offers a window on “nearly three-quarters of a century’s worth of operatic history in the United States—from the waning days of touring operas in English to the firm entrenchment of operatic repertoires in the social purview of middle-class urban and suburban spaces.” Congratulations, Cody!
