We’re thrilled to share another recent publication from one of our students: Rebekah Erdman (PhD pre-candidate, musicology) has published her article, “The Immortal Hour of the English Choral Drama,” in Opera Journal (55:1). Lesser known today, Boughton’s operatic adaptation of Irish mythology was tremendously popular among English audiences following its wartime premiere in 1914. Rebekah’s research helps explain why by exploring the chorus’s varied “roles as living scenery, character, narrator, commentator, and a cappella self-accompaniment,” all of which contributed to the opera’s success. Congratulations, Rebekah!
